Women thinking about entering the modeling business know that there is an incredible amount of competition to contend with. While much success in modeling is due to being in the right place at the right time, there are other factors to consider—such as the type of modeling you choose to focus on. Despite the intense rivalry in the modeling world, if you better understand your market, you can get a leg up on the competition (bad pun not intended.)
Editorial Modeling
Chances are, if you are a huge fan of magazines like Elle, Cosmopolitan, and Mademoiselle—then you are probably fascinated with this type of modeling. You may not be able to control what the magazine editors are seeking; the looks can change at the drop of a dime. Your particular style may be popular one minute—and “out” the next. However, since editorial modeling focuses on publications primarily, it would behoove you to understand what is usually required.
For instance, an article about love and relationships might feature a young lady dressed scantily in lingerie, posed with a hunky male model. To do this kind of modeling, not only will you have to be very aware of your body, you'll also need to infuse a bit of “acting.” The photograph is what editors are counting on to encourage audiences to read the articles that the writers worked hard to submit. If editorial work is your goal, make sure to include in your portfolio, at least one or two photos that showcase your ability to convey certain emotions.
High Fashion Modeling
Watch any episode of Project Runway or America's Next Top Model, and you'll know that a woman will suffer greatly in the industry if she fails to do her homework. That homework would include being well-read about fashion designers. Most young ladies who enter the modeling industry fantasize about working in high fashion. But since this is the most exclusive, most competitive aspect of the business, you'll really need to be on your P's and Q's. It helps if you've already had plenty of experience already under your belt. Typically, fashion houses only work with the most noted models. But that doesn't mean there isn't room for newcomers. Designers are always looking for fresh faces (and figures) to don their creations. But it will help out immensely if your portfolio is really top notchm with tons of creative imagery–as well as a few basic looks.
Catalog Modeling
Most young ladies think that being a catalog model is “low-rent.” And indeed, the pay scale for this type of work is considerably lower than others in the fashion industry. But you might be surprised how much catalog modeling has changed over the years, and also by how much you actually can earn. But wages aside, catalog models must present to the world, the idea that anyone can wear the clothes they're showcasing. This means that you'll see some women who are slightly heavier or rounder than typical editorial and runway models. But you will need to convey a clean, fit appearance in order to be considered. Unlike high fashion and editorial work, a fresh face and universal beauty are highlighted for catalog work; advertisers are looking to you to convince average consumers to buy their products. You may even find that your “approachable” beauty leads to work in television and commercial print modeling.
“Glamour” Modeling
This category of modeling can be quite vast, as there are different types of work involved. You may find that you're highly suited for jobs that center heavily on your sex appeal. This isn't to say that your particular look is sleazy, per se. Sometimes nudity or even partial-nudity is involved. Because of this, many people assume that glamour modeling is one step above pornography. While some men's magazines (not adult mags) do have questionable images therein, the modeling itself is often quite tasteful indeed.
Understanding and preparing for this kind of work involves taking good care of your body and staying fit. Toned muscles are a must, even if there are no specific height or weight requirements. Even though much glamour work appears in print, do not count on art directors and editors to airbrush your flaws or troubled spots. During auditions, you'll still need to present the same type of professionalism you would exhibit if you were seeking high-end editorial work.

Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Bar Refaeli stays classic in black at the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 24/7: SI Swimsuit Overtime party held at TAO Nightclub at the Venetian on Friday (February 12) in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The 24-year-old Israeli model was the cover girl for 2009’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. When asked what she thought of Brooklyn Decker winning this year’s cover, Bar shared, “She deserves it so much. I texted her and congratulated her. I was crossing my fingers that she would win. She’s so beautiful and kind.”
